Concrete Quote Checklist — Houston

What it should state. What's commonly not stated. What to ask before you sign.

You're about to sign a concrete quote — a driveway, patio, slab, or pad in the Houston area. This page lists what a complete one states, the lines that are commonly not stated, and the questions worth asking before your name goes on it.

This is a reading checklist, not advice. Spend Defense doesn't tell you whether to sign — we make sure you've actually seen what's on the page, and what isn't.

What a complete concrete quote states

  • Dimensions and thickness — length, width, and slab thickness in inches (4" is common for driveways; heavier vehicles need more), stated as numbers.

  • Concrete strength — the psi rating of the mix being poured.

  • Reinforcement — rebar or wire mesh: which one, and whether it's included in the price.

  • Base preparation — grading, base material, and compaction described, not just "prep included."

  • Removal and haul-off — whether tearing out and disposing of the old concrete is in the total.

  • Finish and joints — the finish (broom, stamped, exposed aggregate) and control-joint placement.

  • Total price and payment schedule — the full amount, the deposit, and what triggers the balance.

  • Contractor's license number — for licensed work, the contractor license number printed on the document.

What's commonly not stated

  • What's under the slab — a quote that says "pour" but nothing about base or compaction leaves the longest-lived part of the job unstated.
  • Cure time — how long before you can walk on it, park on it, or park something heavy on it is rarely written down.
  • What cracking is covered — concrete cracks; whether the quote or warranty says anything about it, and what "repair" would mean, is usually absent.
  • Drainage and slope — where the water goes after the pour is seldom stated, though it's decided on pour day.
  • Permit and inspection — whether they're needed for your project and who's handling them.
  • Permit and license details for Houston-area concrete work — whether this job needs a permit depends on the scope and on the city or county it's in, so the quote should say whether one is needed, who pulls it, and whether it's in the total. Licensing for this work is set by Texas and local agencies; ask for the license information on the document and look it up yourself with the issuing agency.

None of these gaps decide anything by themselves. They're the lines to ask about before you sign, not after.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. “Ask your Houston concrete contractor: how thick is the slab, what psi is the mix, and is rebar or mesh included?”
  2. “What's the base prep — what goes under the concrete?”
  3. “Is removal and haul-off of the old concrete in this total?”
  4. “How long before I can park on it — and can that go in writing?”
  5. “What does your warranty say about cracking?”
  6. “What deposit do you need, and when is the balance due?”

FAQ

How much should a driveway cost in the Houston area?

We don't price other people's work — a driveway's cost depends on size, thickness, removal of the old slab, access for the truck, and your local concrete prices. What matters on your quote is whether those things are stated at all: dimensions, thickness, strength, reinforcement, prep, removal. A clear quote and a vague quote can carry the same number and mean very different jobs.

What if something on this checklist is missing from my concrete quote?

Ask for it in writing before you sign. Once concrete is poured, unstated terms can't be renegotiated — the slab is the contract, hardened. A missing line is a question, not a verdict; ask while the answer is still free.

Can Spend Defense read my actual concrete quote?

Yes — that's the Quick Check. Most quotes fit easily in the $4.99 Quick Check (up to 10 pages). Send the document and you'll get back what it says, what's not stated, and what to ask before the pour gets scheduled.
