Septic System Service & Replacement Quote Checklist

What it should state. What's commonly not stated. What to ask before you sign.

You're about to sign a septic system service or replacement quote. This page lists what a complete one states, the lines that are commonly not stated, and the questions worth asking before your name goes on it.

This is a reading checklist, not advice. Spend Defense doesn't tell you whether to sign — we make sure you've actually seen what's on the page, and what isn't.

What a complete septic quote states

  • Scope — tank only, drain field only, or the full system — mapped or described.

  • System type and size — the tank size and the type of system being installed or serviced.

  • Soil or perc testing — done, needed, or not part of this quote.

  • Permit and inspection fees — included in the total or passed through to you.

  • Landscaping restoration — regrading, seeding, or replacing what was dug up — included or excluded.

  • Total price and payment — the full amount, the deposit, and when the balance is due.

  • Warranty — length and coverage of the workmanship and equipment warranties.

  • Maintenance requirements — any required maintenance contract tied to the system type, and its cost.

What's commonly not stated

  • Soil test results — a design may depend on a test not yet done; what happens if results change the design is often unstated.
  • Required maintenance contracts — some system types require ongoing service contracts; the cost may not appear in the quote.
  • Restoration — yards, driveways, and sprinklers disturbed by digging may be left to you.
  • Rock or groundwater — extra charges for hard digging or high water are sometimes added mid-job.

None of these gaps decide anything by themselves. They're the lines to ask about before you sign, not after.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. “Is this quote for the tank, the drain field, or the full system?”
  2. “Has soil or perc testing been done, and what happens if results change the design?”
  3. “Are permit and inspection fees in this total?”
  4. “Is landscaping restoration included after digging?”
  5. “Does this system require a maintenance contract, and what will it cost?”

FAQ

How much does septic work usually cost?

We don't price other people's work — cost depends on the system type, soil conditions, local requirements, and the scope of work. What you can check is whether your quote states the scope, testing status, permit fees, and restoration. If it doesn't, that's a question to ask before signing.

What if something on this checklist is missing from my septic quote?

Ask for it in writing before you sign. A missing soil-test answer or restoration line isn't a verdict on the contractor; it's an unknown in a job that digs up your yard. Getting it stated costs nothing and settles it before the excavator arrives.

Can Spend Defense read my actual septic quote?

Yes — that's the Quick Check. Send the document and you'll get back what it says, what's not stated, and what to ask, for $4.99 (up to 10 pages). Quotes bundled with a system design may need the Document Review ($19).
