Auto Insurance Renewal Checklist
What it should state. What's commonly not stated. What to ask before you sign.
Your auto insurance renewal has arrived. This page lists what a complete renewal states, the lines that are commonly not stated, and the questions worth asking before the new term takes effect.
This is a reading checklist, not advice. Spend Defense doesn't tell you whether to sign — we make sure you've actually seen what's on the page, and what isn't.
What a complete auto insurance renewal states
Liability limits — bodily injury and property damage limits, compared to last term.
Deductibles by coverage — comprehensive and collision deductibles, stated separately.
Drivers — every listed driver, with any additions or removals correct.
Vehicles — every vehicle, with VIN and coverage per vehicle.
UM/UIM coverage — uninsured/underinsured motorist limits, or a written rejection.
Discounts — each discount applied, by name.
Premium — the new premium per vehicle and in total, with the change from last term.
Optional coverages — rental reimbursement, roadside, and similar coverages, listed.
What's commonly not stated
- Vanished discounts — a discount present last term can disappear without being highlighted.
- Coverage reductions — lower limits or dropped coverages may appear as changed numbers with no note.
- Why the premium changed — a new total often comes without a reason for each change.
- Driver changes — a driver added or removed in error can go unnoticed if the list isn't checked.
None of these gaps decide anything by themselves. They're the lines to ask about before you sign, not after.
Questions to ask before you sign
- “What changed from last term — limits, deductibles, or coverages?”
- “Are all drivers and vehicles listed correctly?”
- “Which discounts did I have last term that are missing now?”
- “What are my uninsured/underinsured motorist limits?”
- “What caused the premium change?”

FAQ
How much should auto insurance cost?
We don't price other people's policies — premiums depend on drivers, vehicles, location, coverage limits, and history. What you can check is whether your renewal shows what changed from last term: limits, deductibles, drivers, discounts. If it only shows a new total, that's a question to ask your agent.
What if something on this checklist is missing from my auto renewal?
Ask your agent or insurer in writing before the new term starts. A missing discount or changed limit isn't a verdict on the insurer; it's an unknown in coverage you're relying on. Getting it stated costs nothing and settles it before you need it.
Can Spend Defense read my actual auto renewal?
Yes — that's the Quick Check. Send the document and you'll get back what it says, what's not stated, and what to ask, for $4.99 (up to 10 pages). Most declarations pages, even for several vehicles, fit easily within that limit.
