Water Softener & Filtration Purchase Checklist

What it should state. What's commonly not stated. What to ask before you sign.

You're about to sign for a water softener or filtration system — often after an in-home demonstration. This page lists what a complete agreement states, the lines that are commonly not stated, and the questions worth asking before your name goes on it.

This is a reading checklist, not advice. Spend Defense doesn't tell you whether to sign — we make sure you've actually seen what's on the page, and what isn't.

What a complete water treatment agreement states

  • Agreement type — purchase, rental, or lease-purchase — stated plainly.

  • Equipment by model — brand, model, and capacity of each unit.

  • Cash price — the price if paid in full today.

  • Total of payments — if financed or rented: APR, term, and the total of all payments.

  • Installation — what installation includes, and any plumbing or electrical work.

  • Ongoing costs — salt, filters, and service visits, with expected costs.

  • Cancellation window — for in-home sales: the cancellation period, with the exact last date and how to cancel.

  • Warranty — equipment and labor warranty lengths.

What's commonly not stated

  • Total vs. cash price — the gap between the cash price and the total of payments is often not shown side by side.
  • Water test results — demonstration results are usually not documented in the paperwork itself.
  • Maintenance costs — salt, filters, and service after signing are often left out.
  • Cancellation dates — the federal three-day rule for many in-home sales applies, but the exact last date may not be filled in.

None of these gaps decide anything by themselves. They're the lines to ask about before you sign, not after.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. “Is this a purchase, a rental, or a lease-purchase?”
  2. “What is the cash price, and what is the total of all payments if I finance?”
  3. “What will salt, filters, and service cost each year?”
  4. “What is the exact last date I can cancel, and how?”
  5. “Is the water test result written into this paperwork?”

FAQ

How much does a water softener usually cost?

We don't price other people's equipment — cost depends on the system type, capacity, installation, and whether it's bought, rented, or financed. What you can check is whether your agreement states the cash price, the total of payments, and ongoing costs. If it doesn't, ask before signing.

What if something on this checklist is missing from my agreement?

Ask for it in writing before you sign — and note the cancellation date. A missing total of payments or maintenance cost isn't a verdict on the seller; it's an unknown in a contract you may pay on for years. Getting it stated costs nothing and settles it.

Can Spend Defense read my actual water treatment agreement?

Yes — that's the Quick Check. Send the document and you'll get back what it says, what's not stated, and what to ask, for $4.99 (up to 10 pages). If you're inside a cancellation window, send it promptly so the read arrives in time.
